In the nineteenth century, London physician Nathaniel Bagshaw Ward popularised sealed plant cases that kept soot out, held humidity in, and helped living plants survive long sea voyages.
Why the history matters
Ward’s insight was environmental: plants suffer when air and moisture are wrong. Condensation recycling under glass still drives closed-terrarium craft today.
