Under Glass is a small UK library for people making a first closed terrarium. It teaches the climate inside the glass: how to choose a jar, mix a peat-free substrate, pick plants that want the same weather, and wait before adding springtails.
The front door of the site walks one beginner path: a sealed jar, a tropical mix, nerve plant, cushion moss and Pilea depressa, then springtails after the jar has settled. Open bowls and succulents are the other path — not the default.
The name is for that way of keeping life. In Victorian London, Nathaniel Bagshaw Ward watched a fern thrive in a sealed bottle — light in, soot out, water beading and running back down. That story lives on our History page. It is not a furniture shop, and we do not sell antique cases, kits or plants.
Who writes here
Shane Fullwood edits Under Glass. The voice is plain British English for UK rooms: north sills, radiators, short winter light, peat-free mixes. Where a claim goes beyond what we have grown or checked, the article should say so. We do not invent credentials or success rates.
Articles that can panic a beginner — watering, mould, collapse — are written as diagnostics: what you are seeing, what to try first, when to stop. Your name on a page means an editor stood behind it, not that a laboratory replicated every jar.
What we will not do
- We will not pretend a sealed gift jar of succulents is a kind beginner build.
- We will not send you into paludariums, vivariums or animal-keeping as if they were the same hobby.
- We will not hide affiliate or commission links if they appear later. There is no shop on this site today.
- We will not fill pages with jargon (PPFD, VPD) in the lead. A science note can sit at the end if it earns its keep.
Corrections
If a plant name, a mix, or a safety line is wrong, write to us. Factual errors, broken links and misleading wording get fixed. When a correction changes advice, the page should say what changed.
Photo credits belong with the picture. If we have used your image without a proper source line, tell us and we will put it right or take it down.
